Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a loaf pan for easy removal later.
Step 2: Prepare the Meatloaf Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, eggs, onion, garlic, Italian seasoning, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until all ingredients are just combined—avoid overmixing to keep the meatloaf tender.
Step 3: Shape the Meatloaf
Transfer the meat mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and shape it into a loaf. Alternatively, you can use a loaf pan for a more uniform shape. Spread 1/2 cup of marinara sauce evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
Step 4: Bake the Meatloaf
Place the meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the meatloaf from the oven and spread the remaining 1/2 cup marinara sauce over the top.
Step 5: Add the Cheese
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the marinara sauce. Return the meatloaf to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and lightly golden and the internal temperature of the meatloaf reaches 160°F (71°C).
Step 6: Rest and Serve
Once baked, let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute and makes for a more flavorful slice.
Cook Notes
- Breadcrumbs: You can substitute panko breadcrumbs for a lighter texture. If you’re following a low-carb diet, use crushed pork rinds instead.
- Mixing the Meat: Avoid overmixing the meat mixture, as this can make the meatloaf dense and tough. Mix until just combined.
- Moist Meatloaf Tip: Adding milk keeps the meatloaf moist. If you are dairy-free, you can use unsweetened almond milk or broth instead.
